Frequently Asked Questions

What to do if my child doesn’t eat properly?

This is very common in children and it may be due to various causes. But it is very important not to force or pressurize the child to eat as this will aggravate the problem and understand his/ her eating style. You may try:

  • Giving them a choice of food, including healthy options.

  • Limit in between meal time snacks.

  • Do not serve them too much food, but in age-appropriate quantity, and start with small portions.

  • Limit mealtime distractions like television or tablets and mobile phones.

  • Create a happy and enjoyable family time during the meals.

My 6-year-old son throws a lot of tantrums and has become very stubborn. How should I deal with him?

One simple answer is IGNORE and Walk away!!

  • Do not react to their tantrums in words, actions, or body language.

  • Never agree to what they want after they show tantrums as this will increase this behavior. If you want to agree to them, say yes before they show tantrums, else DO NOT AGREE at all.

  • Do not lose your temper or shout or hit them but BE ASSERTIVE. No means No!!

  • Stay calm and try not to show any reaction to what they do, even in public. It’s easy said than done, but this is the only solution to fade off and reduce this behavior. You are not the only parent with such children. Every Child is different and Unique. Do not compare them with others as you will not want to be compared with other parents.

  • Do not always ignore them. (Ignore them only when they are showing tantrums). At all other times, listen to them carefully and love and respect them. Treat all your children without bias. Explain them that younger sib needs more help and involve them in care of their smaller brothers and sisters.

My child has frequent episodes of cold and cough, is his immunity low? What should I do?

Cold and cough are very common in children and it’s the natural body response against the virus causing it. Immunity in kids develops gradually as they get exposed. So there is nothing to worry about it, but at the same time important to see your pediatrician to rule out any other infection that might be serious.

  • Give them warm food and beverages.

  • Steam inhalations if advised.
  • Plenty of water and fluids to keep them hydrated and wash away the toxins.

  • Keep the room well-ventilated with fresh air and at comfortable temperature.

  • Give them immunity-boosting food items like ginger, garlic, citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, amla, green leafy vegetables and other vegetables.

We feel that our child is overweight, as compared to other kids in his class. Is it harmful? What can we do?

Yes, being overweight or obese is very harmful and may lead to other health issues. Visit your pediatrician at the earliest to find out if your child is overweight or obese. If yes, follow their instructions and advice. You may have to:

  • Limit (not stop) their junk food and sugary diet and drinks and replace them with tasty healthy ones.

  • Encourage intake of more water and non-sugar drinks.

  • Include lots of green vegetables and fruits in their diet.

  • Emphasize their physical activity (Not in gym) in ways that are interesting to them. For e.g., instead of playing mobile or board games encourage playing hide and seek, catch-catch, and sports activities like cycling, swimming, etc. which are great calorie burners. NEVER try to put them on strict exercise schedules, as it will not work.

My 4-year-old daughter feels shy is meeting new people and doesn’t greet them or answer whatever they ask. Is it normal? What should we do?

Every child is different and is in the process of learning. it’s okay if your child takes time to open up. Do not force her to greet or answer, but give her time and choice like- It’s ok if you don’t feel like greeting aunty right now, we are here for an hour and you can say hello, whenever you feel comfortable. Even if she does not, don’t worry, she will gradually do it. But shouting, forcing, bribing, etc. will only make things worse. Also, it is important to consult your pediatrician, just to rule out some other behavior issues needing professional intervention.

What do pediatricians mean?

A paediatrician is a child's physician who provides not only medical care for children who are acutely or chronically ill but also preventive health services for healthy children.

My child is very weak and thin compared to other kids of her age. Is there any medicine for gaining weight?

There is no medicine for weight gain. Weak and thin have different meanings. If your child is eating well and is active enough, do not worry. But if he is not eating well, is not active and is lethargic, avoids playing, etc. see your pediatrician, to know the cause. There may be various reasons for this and finding the root cause is important to find the solution.
